You can get Windows Vista Ultimate OEM, which basically translates to you dont get documentation or a fancy package...just the DVD on Newegg for pretty cheap.

After reading the white pages for Vista and all the stuff they are doing to protect media, chips, etc I will pass vista until more information is available.

My co-worker was explaining to me basically if you try playing a HD-DVD / Blu-Ray and your chips are not "Vista Certified" or some bull shit, it will reduce the quality down to a standard DVD or something. Regardless if the disc is legit or not. This copy protection is built into Vista's core.

Who has a Blu-ray or HD-Dvd drive in their computer yet. I seen a few for like $900. It's gonna take a little while for the prices to go down and by the time that happens someone will crack it or do something to override it.

You'd have to manipulate the OS to think that not only is the Blu-Ray / HD-DVD player is 'legit' you'll also have to fool the Motherboard chipset, the cpu chip, the sound-card chipset, the blu-ray / hddvd drive, the video card chipset to think it also. It's a lot of work, and the major difference between XP and Vista is with XP DVD encryption was built as an add-on, while with vista, it's the CORE of the OS.

how would they even check if you really owned the dvd or cd or not...Every chipset will have authenification properties. The chipsets must be certified by Microsoft for Vista to even allow the content to pass through them.

If your chipset isn't, then your fucked.

I read that they changed the licensing stuff though...you can replace your motherboard and Vista will still work properly. I don't know how that affects this HD DVD thing...but I'm sure that you will be able to play blu-ray or HD DVD fine...
