So my brother tried turning on the computer in our living room and it wouldn't...

When the powersupply is plugged in and turned on it makes this really high pitched hissing noise, I'm not really sure what that means but I'm pretty sure it shouldn't be making that kind of sound! When I press the power button the powersupply hisses a little bit higher and the computer doesn't turn on. The little LED light on the motherboard lights up so there must be some power going through it...but then I'm not exactly sure if that would be a proper assumption.

What do you guys think?

No, it just makes this really high pitched noise...the fan doesn't spin or anything...my computer does nothing when I press the power button

find out if the sound is coming from the psu or the computer components. My guess is its the psu. I am assuming there is no beeping or anything? Try unplugging all your cdroms / hard drives and see what happens.

Just tried it and it is the PSU thats making the high pitched noise. As soon as I switch the PSU on through the switch in the back it makes the noise...and when I unplug everything the computer does nothing when I press the power button

Power supply is a common fail point in todays computers. Yank it out and have it tested by someone that can load the voltages down. Just metering the voltage points unloaded does no good. I have heard caps hiss for a while then bang! Cap feathers all over the place.
