Well my question is do you really need all that power? Most of the cards that can SLI are very powerful and I don't see any need for THAT much power, unless you have cash you are trying to burn.

I have a ATI 9800XT and it's plenty powerful for almost anything I need to do. It is even considered slow by today's standards.

So really do you need all that power? If not maybe get a card that 'can' SLI, and burn that money in more ram or something along those lines, then when it comes to the point you need SLI you can buy another. But in all honesty, it seems that when you add another card for SLI it doesn't increase the power 2x, just maybe another 1/4 - 1/2. So I'd say buy one card, then if you need more power, just buy another card when the time comes.

If you must have the fastest and most expensive gear possible for benchmarking, bragging rights, etc.. go with SLI. But if you just want a good gaming card, go for any of the recent ATI or Nvidia releases.

ATI(top of the line): x800, x850
Nvidia(top of the line): 6800, 7800

Check out http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20050705/index.html for comparisons of all of the most recent cards (not including the 7800). Then select card that you want depending on your price range.

Personally, I have a 6800GT which I bought when it came out, now about $50-$100 cheaper but can still blasts through the newest games.
